HR Consulting FAQs

Practical answers to common HR questions from Okanagan business owners and leaders.

HRitage provides practical HR consulting, fractional HR support, HR assessments and manager training for businesses and organizations in Kelowna, Lake Country, Vernon and throughout the Okanagan.

Here are answers to some of the questions we hear most often.

What Does an HR Consultant Do for a Small or Growing Business?

Running a growing business is exciting—but growth often brings people challenges that owners did not face when the organization was smaller.

Hiring becomes more frequent. Managers need greater support. Workplace policies must become more formal. Performance concerns become harder to manage, and employment decisions carry greater risk.

When Should a Small Business Hire an HR Consultant?

Many small-business owners manage HR responsibilities themselves in the early stages of growth. They hire employees, answer workplace questions, resolve disagreements, and make decisions based on their experience and knowledge of the team.

This can work well when the business is small and employee matters are relatively straightforward. However, as the organization grows, people management becomes more complex—and informal practices may no longer be enough.

What Is Fractional HR—and Is It Right for Your Business?

Growing businesses eventually reach a point where managing people becomes too important—and too complex—to handle informally.

Employee questions become more frequent. Managers need support with difficult conversations. Hiring increases. Policies need attention. Performance concerns require consistent follow-through, and leadership begins thinking more seriously about workforce planning and organizational growth.

How Much Does HR Consulting Cost in Kelowna and the Okanagan?

One of the first questions business owners ask when considering outside HR support is straightforward: How much will it cost?

The honest answer is that HR consulting costs depend on the type of support required, the complexity of the situation, the size of the organization, and how long the work will take.

What Is an HR Health Check or HR Assessment?

Most organizations pay close attention to their financial health, customer satisfaction, and operational performance. Their people-management practices, however, are often reviewed only after a serious problem occurs.

An HR Health Check, sometimes called an HR assessment or HR audit, is a structured review of an organization’s current HR practices, processes, and people-management systems.

What's the difference between an HR audit and an HR assessment?

An HR audit often focuses heavily on compliance, documentation and whether required HR practices are in place.

An HR assessment can take a broader look at how the organization’s people practices are actually working.

HRitage’s People & Performance Health Check combines elements of both by reviewing HR foundations while also examining leadership, performance management, employee experience, HR systems and organizational readiness for growth.

Can an HR consultant help with a difficult or underperforming employee?

Yes. HR consultants commonly help managers work through employee performance concerns, difficult conversations, documentation, expectations, workplace conflict and employee-relations issues.

HRitage helps leaders understand the situation, consider appropriate options and establish a practical path forward. Situations requiring legal advice may also require consultation with qualified employment counsel.

Do you provide manager and leadership training in Kelowna?

Yes. HRitage provides manager training and leadership development for organizations in Kelowna, Lake Country, Vernon and throughout the Okanagan.

Manager Essentials™ can be delivered to groups of managers within an organization and is particularly useful for new managers, supervisors and experienced managers who have never received formal people-leadership training.

We already have an HR coordinator. Can HRitage still help us?

Absolutely. An organization doesn’t necessarily need another HR employee—it may need more HR experience.

HRitage can work alongside an existing HR coordinator, administrator or generalist by providing senior HR guidance, coaching, complex employee-relations support, HR strategy, workforce planning and organizational-development expertise.

This is particularly relevant to the HRitage Partner and Strategic Partner services.

What is the difference between fractional HR and hiring an HR manager?

Hiring an HR manager creates a permanent internal position with salary, benefits and ongoing employment costs.

Fractional HR provides access to experienced HR expertise at a level that fits the organization’s current needs.

For businesses that don’t yet require a full-time senior HR leader, fractional HR can provide flexible access to HR advice, employee-relations support, manager coaching and strategic HR leadership without creating another full-time executive or management position.

Can HRitage help with organizational growth and change?

Yes. People practices that worked when an organization had 20 employees may not work when it has 50, 100 or more.

HRitage can support organizations with workforce planning, organizational structure, leadership development, succession planning, HR systems, change management, performance practices and organizational development as the business grows or changes.

What size organizations does HRitage work with?

HRitage is primarily designed for small and mid-sized organizations, particularly those with approximately 15–250 employees.

Some clients may have no dedicated HR professional, while others may already have an HR administrator, coordinator or generalist but need more experienced or strategic HR support.

The right fit depends more on the organization’s needs than employee count alone.

What areas does HRitage serve?

HRitage is based in the Okanagan and provides HR consulting to businesses and organizations in Kelowna, Lake Country, Vernon and surrounding Okanagan communities.

Depending on the engagement, HR consulting, HR advisory and organizational-development services can also be provided remotely to organizations outside the immediate region.
